Mr. Cotton Bowl, Field Scovell, Receives Football Bowl Association's Legacy Award

Field Scovell, who served as Team Selection Chairman of the Cotton Bowl Classic for the better part of four decades, will be honored as a recipient of the Football Bowl Association’s Legacy Award for 2018.

Along with Scovell, three other men will receive the Legacy Award. Earnie Seiler, who created the Orange Bowl Festival and halftime extravaganzas, and Sugar Bowl founders Fred Digby and Warren Miller, will be honored for their “distinguished service within the Bowl industry,” when the FBA holds its annual meeting on April 17-19 in Boise, Idaho.

In making the announcement, FBA Executive Director Wright Waters noted that “each of these individuals represent a legacy that is re-recognized each year by the success of the Cotton Bowl, Orange Bowl and Sugar Bowl. All of these games are iconic in its own right, and an institution in Dallas, Miami and New Orleans. Each owes its success to the early achievements of these four pioneers.”

Scovell left his mark on everything he touched. He was the consummate public relations man and the patriarch of the Dallas and North Texas sporting community. His famous ‘Howdy, Podner’ greeting and spontaneous one-liners opened countless doors for the City of Dallas. Scovell combined an athletic background with a magnetic personality and keen sense of humor and blended it all together in his job as “Mr. Cotton Bowl.” The Field Scovell Trophy is presented each year to the champion of the Classic. Scovell passed away in 1992 at the age of 85.

“The legacy left by Mr. Scovell still resonates today,” Rick Baker, Cotton Bowl Athletic Association President/CEO said. “This great award honors the lasting impact Field had on our organization and the entire college football community.”

The 2018 Legacy Award will be presented by Kevin McDonald, the FBA executive committee chairman and executive director of the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Baker will accept the award on behalf of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.
