CARL ICE NAMED CHAIRMAN OF CBAA
CARL ICE NAMED CHAIRMAN OF COTTON BOWL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION
ARLINGTON, March 1, 2018 – North Texas businessman Carl R. Ice has been elected to a two-year term as Chairman of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association (CBAA), the sponsoring agency of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.
Ice is President and Chief Executive Officer for BNSF Railway based in Fort Worth. His involvement with the CBAA dates back to 2012 as a member of the Board of Directors. He has served as Vice-Chairman on the Classic’s Executive Committee for the past two years.
Ice becomes the CBAA’s 40th Chairman and succeeds Jay McAuley who will remain on the Executive Committee as the Immediate Past Chairman. In his position as Chairman, Ice will coordinate all facets of business affairs for the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic and will manage the game’s activities as a member of the College Football Playoff. The 83rd Classic is a College Football Playoff Semifinal and will be played on December 29, 2018.

Receiving an opportunity to serve in a leadership role for a bowl game with the national prestige of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic is something I don’t take lightly. Few athletic events in America have more history and tradition than the Classic.
“The impact the Goodyear Cotton Bowl has on North Texas is enormous and continuing to grow our game within the community and state is of key importance,” said Ice. “Another fundamental responsibility is providing an unforgettable Cotton Bowl experience for our student-athletes. I’m excited to have such a wonderful opportunity to lead this organization.”
Ice, a native of Topeka, Kansas, is a 1979 graduate of Kansas State University where he earned a degree in Industrial Engineering. He was appointed to his current position of President and Chief Executive Officer for BNSF Railway on January 1, 2014. Previously, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer with the responsibility for day-to-day operations of the company, helping to drive BNSF’s strategies for safety, service, growth, efficiency and technology.
Under Ice’s leadership, BNSF is recognized for its safety, on-time performance and productivity, and is one of North America’s leading freight transportation companies. BNSF operates in 28 states and in three Canadian provinces. Ice was honored in 2015 as “Railroader of the Year” by Railway Age, an American trade journal for the rail transport industry.
Ice and his wife Mary, a 1980 Kansas State graduate, are quite active with their alma mater. He is a Trustee for the Kansas State University Foundation and currently serves as Vice Chairman for the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Their commitment and generosity to K-State athletics has been recognized for their partnership on the West Stadium Center and the Vanier Football Complex at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Also, in September, 2015, the basketball training center at K-State was named the ‘Ice Family Basketball Center’.
In addition to his volunteer work with the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association, Ice is a member of the Association of American Railroads Board of Directors, and is Past Chairman of the Salvation Army (DFW) Advisory Board Leadership.
Carl and Mary live in Westlake, and they have two grown children, Marshall and Karen who are also graduates of Kansas State University.
Joining Ice and McAuley on the Executive Committee are Dave Brown, J. J. Gomez, Bryant Patton and S. Denton Walker III. Brown, Gomez and Patton are each serving a second term on the committee. Past CBAA Chairman Dan Novakov will continue to be a part of the leadership team along with Past Chairman Tommy Bain who now assumes the role as Special Advisor to the Chairman. W. Mike Baggett is the CBAA’s Legal Counsel while Fin Ewing III leads the Playoff Committee.
Brown is the Chief Operating Officer and General Manager of the American Airlines Center in Dallas where he oversees event programming, facility services and capital improvements. Brown has been involved in major arena operations for more than 30 years. He holds a degree in Business Management from Texas A&M University. Brown is a Past-Chairman of the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau and serves on a number of civic boards including Downtown Dallas, Inc., Dallas All Sports Association, and the Dallas Sports Commission.
Gomez has worked in the banking and financial services industry for more than 29 years. Currently, he serves as President of PlainsCapital Bank-Victory Park in Dallas. Gomez joined PlainsCapital in 1989 and has held many diverse positions with the bank. He is a recipient of the coveted PlainsCapital PRIDE Award. Gomez earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Texas Tech University. He is involved in many community and business organizations that include the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and Park Cities Baptist Church. Gomez also serves on the Board of Directors for the First Tee of Greater Dallas and Goodwill of Dallas.
Patton is the President of BRYCAP Investments, Inc., of Dallas. His business expertise includes many phases of the independent oil, gas and midstream business. Patton spent 20 years as a principal in two oil and gas exploration and production companies, eight years as an institutional portfolio manager, and the last 12 years creating ownership and providing capital formation and management strategy to several energy companies. Patton is a past President of the Dallas Petroleum Club (2016). He attended Texas Christian University and UT-Dallas.
Since 2006, Walker has served as the Senior Managing Director for office and retail development within the Trammell Crow Company of Dallas/Fort Worth. Walker joined the firm in 1989 and became one of the company’s top producers as a leasing agent/marketing principal. He has leased more than 15 million square feet during the past 14 years producing a total rental income of $250 million. Walker earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his MBA from SMU’s Cox School of Business. He is a Past President of the NAIOP North Texas Chapter, and is a member of the Greater Dallas Chamber of Commerce.
