Classic Moved to Primetime

The Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic in conjunction with the College Football Playoff and ESPN announced today that the 82nd edition of the Classic will be moved to Friday, Dec. 29th, 2017 and played in an exclusive primetime window on ESPN.

The game was previously scheduled in an earlier window on Saturday, Dec. 30th. The exact kickoff time on Friday night will be announced at a later date.

“When we first moved to AT&T Stadium, the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic enjoyed a successful run of games on Friday night,” Jay McAuley, Chairman of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic said. “There’s a special energy surrounding Friday night games in Texas, and rest assured, come primetime on December 29th, the atmosphere inside AT&T Stadium will be electric.

“This opportunity enables the Classic to stand alone and kick off the holiday weekend as the only bowl game on Friday night. We couldn’t be more excited about the move presented to us by the College Football Playoff and ESPN. Our new date gives local fans and those from out of state the best opportunity to come to North Texas and enjoy what will most likely be a battle of Top 10 teams.”

The December 29th date will mark the earliest kickoff in the Classic’s 82-year history dating back to the game’s inception in 1937 and only the third time the game has been played in December. The Cotton Bowl was played on New Year’s Eve in 1966 (SMU vs. Georgia), and the Classic hosted the College Football Playoff Semifinal on December 31st in 2015 (Michigan State vs. Alabama).

The Classic last kicked off on a Friday night in 2014 when Missouri played Oklahoma State. This year’s game will mark the fifth time the Cotton Bowl has played on Friday night since moving to AT&T Stadium in 2010.

“We’ve sold out every year since moving to AT&T Stadium, and with this announcement of an exclusive primetime window, we expect that trend to continue”, Rick Baker, President/CEO of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic said. “Our goal is to provide the very best experience for our tremendous season-ticket holders, and this will certainly help us maximize their investment in our game. We are grateful to the College Football Playoff and ESPN for this opportunity.”
