Charlie Fiss to Receive the Bert McGrane Award
The Cotton Bowl Athletic Association’s mission is to create the most innovative of all college football bowl games and be the leader in creating premier college sports experiences, and when it comes to media operations, there’s one man that has led the charge and developed a reputation unparalleled in the industry for creating the best experience for media.
Charlie Fiss has consistently set the bar for bowl media operations dating back to his first Classic with Heisman winner Doug Flutie in 1985. For his extraordinary efforts, Charlie was honored with the Bert McGrane Award at a breakfast in his honor at the College Football Playoff National Championship in Tampa Bay on Jan. 9th.
The Bert McGrane Award is presented annually to a member of the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) to recognize distinguished service to the organization and college football.
“The FWAA and the Cotton Bowl share a special relationship,” Rick Baker, Cotton Bowl Athletic Association President/CEO said. “Charlie has been a leader with his steadfast approach to our partnership with the FWAA. Through his extraordinary efforts over three decades, he’s made a lasting impact on the Cotton Bowl, the FWAA and college football. No one is more deserving. I’m proud that Charlie joins an illustrious group of Cotton Bowl representatives to win the Bert McGrane Award.”
Charlie becomes the fourth representative from the Cotton Bowl to win the award joining Wilber Evans (1978), Jim Brock (1989) and Field Scovell (1999). The Award was established in 1974 as a memorial to Bert McGrane, long-time Des Moines Register-Tribune sports writer who was one of the founding members of the FWAA. He was the FWAA’s Executive Director from the early 1940’s until 1973.
The contributions made by Charlie to the FWAA are numerable, but Steve Richardson, Executive Director of the FWAA, would tell you his greatest impact over the years is his work in compiling and coordinating shipment of the FWAA Directory, known as the “bible” for FWAA members and universities.
