WISCONSIN VISITS SCOTTISH RITE HOSPITAL
Wisconsin Head Coach Paul Chryst and the entire Badger football team spent their afternoon
visiting Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. The team spent an hour signing autographs and playing
games with patients.
Texas Scottish Rite Hospital President and CEO, Robert Walker, welcomed the team and Coach Chryst,
along with Jay McAuley, Chairman of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association.
During the program, Seth Klugherz, Director of Marketing for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company,
presented Texas Scottish Rite Hospital a $10,000 check, as well as a certificate for two people to ride the
Goodyear blimp.
Maddy Harrison, a patient of Texas Scottish Rite, presented Coach Chryst with a special drawing that she
created of the team leading up to the 81 st Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.
“I want to thank Texas Scottish Rite and the Cotton Bowl for giving us the opportunity to be here today,”
Chryst said. “We also want to thank the staff of Texas Scottish Rite for all that they do for so many
people. We’re excited to be here. This is something we’ve been talking about and our players can’t wait
to get to know each and every one.”
As the event continued, the team was pumped up by a former patient who got on stage and cheered on the
team with the ritual “Jump Around” dance the Badger fans do at each game between quarters.
Upon entering the atrium, each Badger student-athlete was given a Texas Scottish Rite Hospital cap and
Wisconsin Badger pennant to autograph and hand to patients. Along with the school items, each child
received a Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic goodie bag that was distributed by volunteers from American
Airlines.
“It’s nice to come here today and see the kids,” said Badger running back Dare Ogunbowale. “One thing
we can share with them today is adversity. We came across adversity many times this season and we want
to tell them that things aren’t always going to go our way, but if we persevere and keep working hard
through them, we can be successful and get past those obstacles.”
Cornerback Sojourn Shelton was excited about attending his first hospital visit for a bowl game and
brightening up the children’s day by making it a fun experience for them. As a student-athlete, this is the
best part for him aside from being on the field.
“As a student-athlete and person in general to come here and brighten up a kid’s day is a plus,” said
Shelton. “The Cotton Bowl has done a tremendous job in putting this together for us. I’ve been fortunate
to play in a lot of bowl games, but this is the first time I’ve been a part of something like this, and it just
warms my heart and makes me happy to come here and put some smiles on kids’ faces.”
