FUTURE PLAYING DATES FOR THE GOODYEAR COTTON BOWL ANNOUNCED BY THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF

The Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic is moving to Saturday beginning with the 2017 season.

The College Football Playoff announced today that the Classic will be played on three consecutive Saturdays starting on December 30, 2017, December 29, 2018, and December 28, 2019. The game in 2018 is a Playoff Semifinal. Game times will be announced at a later date.

“This is wonderful news for our game,” said Jay McAuley, Chairman of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association. “Saturdays are tradition. They are tailor-made for college football. It’s a day when families and friends come together to watch and talk college football. We couldn’t have asked for a better timeslot to showcase the Goodyear Cotton Bowl and Texas hospitality to fans that choose to spend part of their holiday weekend with us at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.”

Historically, the Classic has been played prior to New Year’s Day only twice – December 31, 1966, and this past season when the Goodyear Cotton Bowl hosted the College Football Playoff Semifinal on December 31, 2015.

CBAA President and CEO Rick Baker welcomes this opportunity to showcase the Classic on Saturday. “We can’t wait,” said Baker. “Saturday afternoons and evenings offer the perfect opportunity for the most number of fans to attend our game or watch on ESPN, our television partner. Protecting season ticket holders has always been a priority with us. A football Saturday gives them ample opportunity to travel to North Texas to enjoy the Cotton Bowl experience and then return home without missing a lot of work days. This is great news for our game and the College Football Playoff.”

Before moving to three consecutive Saturdays, the Classic will play this season at Noon on Monday, January 2, 2017. As a member of the College Football Playoff "New Year's Six," the Goodyear Cotton Bowl hosts one of college football’s premier bowl matchups on an annual basis, including a Playoff Semifinal every third year.

The Cotton Bowl Classic was formed in 1937 with the mission of providing the most innovative of all college football bowl games and to be a leader in creating premier college sports experiences for universities, student-athletes, sponsors and the community. Since the inaugural game in 1937, the Classic has contributed more than $200 million to participating institutions. Each year, football fans attending the Cotton Bowl Classic generate more than $30 million in economic impact for the North Texas community.
