The Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic held its 7th annual youth football clinic on July 20th, as 350 kids from North Texas gathered at AT&T Stadium to learn offensive and defensive fundamentals from area high school and college coaches.

Special guests included the voice of the Dallas Cowboys and Goodyear Cotton Bowl Brad Sham, former No. 1 NFL draft pick and three-time Super Bowl Champion, and Cotton Bowl MVP Russell Maryland, as well as Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr.

All three spoke to the kids after camp activities ended. When asked what message he was trying to send the kids, Maryland said “no matter who tells them what they can’t do, the message is that if you put your mind to it, have a passion for it, you can do whatever you want to do in this life.”
When asked the same question, Carr reflected on his own youth.

“I was never the biggest guy on the field or on the court, but I just needed the opportunity. I didn’t have excuses I just wanted one chance to go out there and prove myself, and I feel like the work that I put in before that opportunity came prepared me for the situation,” Carr said. “That’s especially how I made it to the NFL from high school to college. I got my first shot just being ready as an athlete. In any success in life you take the same competitive attitude you have in sports and apply it to whatever else you want to be in life.”

Each participant walked away with a string bag with Cotton Bowl merchandise as well as products donated by Wilson Sporting Goods, a sponsor of the youth clinic.
