Cotton Bowl Classic Records

FBS Bowl Record:
* Baylor’s total of 603 passing yards is an FBS Bowl Record. The total surpassed the previous record of 576 passing yards accomplished twice previously, by Marshall vs. East Carolina in the 2001 GMAC Bowl and by BYU vs. Penn State in the 1989 Holiday Bowl.

Plays/Scoring Drives Notables (First Half):
* MSU Jeremy Langford 65-yard rush on the Spartans’ opening drive of the first quarter was the 10th longest rushing play in Classic History.
* MSU opening possession scoring drive was the seventh-quickest scoring drive in Classic History. The Spartans drove 75 yards in six plays. The 2:33 scoring drive was capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Jeremy Langford at 12:27 of the first quarter.
* Baylor’s 93-yard (10 plays) scoring drive on its first possession of the game tied for the 9th longest scoring drive (by yardage) in Classic History.

First Quarter Record:
* The 28 combined points by MSU (14) and Baylor (14) in the first quarter ties a Classic Record matching the 28 combined points scored in the 1995 Classic between USC (28) and Texas Tech (0). First Quarter Notable:
* Both MSU and Baylor tied for fourth in Classic History with 14 points each in the first quarter. It marked the first time since 2009 that a team has scored as many as 14 points in the first quarter.

Halftime Records:
* Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty set a Cotton Bowl record with 245 yards passing in the first half besting the previous record held by USC’s Rob Johnson (235 yards) in the 1995 Classic against Texas Tech.
* Petty also set a Cotton Bowl record with 249 total offensive yards in the first half besting the previous record held by Kansas State’s Jonathan Beasley (238 yards) in the 2001 Classic against Tennessee.

Halftime Notables:
* Baylor’s 24 points in the first half tied for seventh in Classic History.
* The combined 38 points scored in the first half tied for fourth most in the opening half and tied for sixth most in any half in Classic History.
* MSU Jeremy Langford rushed for 116 yards on 16 carries in the first half. His 116 yards is fourth most in Classic History in the first half.
* Petty ranked second in the Cotton Bowl record books for completions in the first half with 18.
* MSU quarterback Connor Cook’s 12 completions in the first half tied for 10th in Cotton Bowl history.
* Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman’s 97 yards receiving in the first half ranks eighth in the Cotton Bowl record book. * Baylor wide receiver Antwan Goodley had five receptions in the first half and tied for sixth in that category in the Cotton Bowl record book.

Plays/Scoring Drives Notables (Second Half):
* Baylor’s scoring drive to open the second half marked the quickest scoring drive to start any half in Cotton Bowl history. The Bears scored on a 74-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Petty to KD Cannon with 14:32 remaining in the third quarter. The previous quickest scoring drive to start a half was Georgia scoring with 13:55 to play in the first quarter of the 1967 Classic against SMU.
* The 74-yard touchdown completion from Baylor’s Bryce Petty to KD Cannon ranks as the seventh longest passing touchdown play in Cotton Bowl history. It also marked the eighth longest passing play of any kind in Classic history.
* Baylor placekicker Chris Callahan 46-yard field goal in the third quarter tied for seventh on the list for longest field goals in Cotton Bowl history.

Third Quarter Records:
* The 24 points scored by Baylor (17) and Michigan State (7) in the third quarter tied a Cotton Bowl Classic record for most combined points in the third quarter tying the 1999 Classic between Texas (24) and Mississippi State (0).
* The 62 combined points by Baylor (41) and Michigan State (21) through three quarters is a Cotton Bowl record.

Game Records:
* The 83 combined points scored by Michigan State (42) and Baylor (41) is a Cotton Bowl record. The previous record of 81 points came in the 2009 game between Ole Miss (47) and Texas Tech (34).
* The 11 combined touchdowns (Michigan State – 6, Baylor – 5) tied a Cotton Bowl record. Ole Miss (6) and Texas Tech (5) also combined for 11 in the 2009 Cotton Bowl.
* The combined 1,135 yards of total offense (Baylor – 583, Michigan State – 562) is a Cotton Bowl record. The previous record was 1,038 combined total yards in the 1990 Classic between Arkansas (568) and Tennessee (470).
* The teams also combined for the most passing yards in Cotton Bowl history with 917 (Baylor – 603, MSU – 314). The previous mark was 656 yards by Texas Tech (364) and Ole Miss (292) in the 2009 Classic.
* The 61 combined pass completions by Baylor (37) and Michigan State (24) is a Cotton Bowl record. The previous mark was 58 in the 2013 Cotton Bowl with Oklahoma (35) and Texas A&M (23).
* Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty passed for a Cotton Bowl record 550 yards on 36 completions. The previous Cotton Bowl record for passing yards was held by Oklahoma State’s Clint Chelf who threw for 377 yards against Missouri in 2014.
* Baylor’s Bryce Petty tied a Cotton Bowl record for completions with 36, tying Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell who completed 36 passed against Ole Miss in the 2009 Classic. *Baylor’s 603 team passing yards set a Cotton Bowl record. The previous record was held by USC who passed for 435 yards against Texas Tech in 1995.
* Baylor set a Cotton Bowl record for passing completions (37). The previous record was 36 completions by Texas Tech vs. Ole Miss in 2009.

Game Notables:
* Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty tallied 514 yards (550 pass, -36 rush) on 58 plays of total offense. The total ranks second all-time in Cotton Bowl history only trailing Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel (516) vs. Oklahoma in 2013. His 58 plays ranks third on the record list.
* Petty ranks third in the record books with 51 attempts in a Cotton Bowl game.
* Petty’s 141 yards combined on his three touchdown passes ranks second all time for most yards on touchdown passes. Petty completed a 49-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and a 74-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter with both going to KD Cannon. He then added an 18-yard touchdown pass to LaQuan McGowan in the third quarter.
* Petty ranks tied for second on the list for points responsible with 24 points
* Petty’s completion percentage of .706 ranks ninth on the single game completion percentage list.
* Baylor’s team completion percentage of .712 ranks eighth on the Cotton Bowl record list.
* Baylor wide receiver KD Cannon earned 197 yards receiving on eight receptions. His total receiving yardage ranks third in Cotton Bowl history. His eight receptions ranks tied for seventh in the record books.
* Cannon’s two touchdown receptions tied for third on the Cotton Bowl record list.
* Cannon’s 123 yards combined on his two touchdown catches ranks second all time for most yards on touchdown receptions. Cannon hauled in a 49-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and a 74-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.
* Cannon’s 12 points receiving (2 TD) is tied for third in Cotton Bowl Classic history.
* Baylor wide receiver Antwan Goodley had nine receptions for 93 yards. His nine receptions tied for fourth most in Cotton Bowl history.
* Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman earned 150 yards receiving on seven receptions, ranking him sixth on the single game receiving yardage list in a Cotton Bowl Classic.
* Baylor placekicker Chris Callahan scored 11 points, which tied for third in Cotton Bowl history. He made two field goals and 5 PAT.
* Baylor’s 52 passing attempts ranks third in Cotton Bowl history behind 58 – Texas Tech vs. Ole Miss and 57 – Oklahoma State vs. Missouri.
* Baylor’s 11 penalties for 105 yards ranks third on both the list of most penalties and penalty yardage in a Cotton Bowl.
* Baylor’s 583 yards of total offense was the second highest offensive output in Cotton Bowl history, trailing only Texas A&M who earned 633 yards of total offense vs. Oklahoma in the 2013 Cotton Bowl. Baylor’s average of 7.88 yards per play also ranked second behind Texas A&M.
* Baylor’s -20 rushing yards on 22 attempts were the second fewest in Cotton Bowl history, second only to Texas (-27) on 25 attempts vs. Arkansas in the 2000 Cotton Bowl.
* Baylor’s 22 rushing attempts were the third fewest team rushing attempts in a Cotton Bowl Classic.
* MSU quarterback Connor Cook passed for 314 yards on 24 completions. His total ranked fourth on the Cotton Bowl passing yardage list. His 24 completions ranked tied for fifth while his 42 attempts ranked sixth.
* MSU Jeremy Langford became the 55th player to rush for more than 100 yards in the Cotton Bowl Classic. Langford finished the game with 162 yards, ranking 10th on the Cotton Bowl single game rushing list. His 27 rushing attempts tied for 10th in Classic history.
* Langford’s three rushing touchdowns tied for second in Cotton Bowl history and is the most since Missouri’s Tony Temple set the record with four in 2008 against Arkansas.
* The two teams (Baylor – 52, MSU – 42) combined for 94 passing attempts which ranks second all-time in Cotton Bowl history. The record is 101 attempts set by Oklahoma State (57) and Missouri (44) in the 2014 Classic.
* Baylor (74) and Michigan State (88) combined for the second most total plays (162) in Cotton Bowl history. The record is 187 in the 2014 Classic (Oklahoma State – 96, Missouri 91).
* The 45 combined points scored in the second half by Baylor (17) and Michigan State (28) ranks third in Cotton Bowl history.
* Michigan State’s five defensive sacks ranked tied for eighth in Cotton Bowl history. The Spartans had five sacks for (-39) yards.
