AT&T Cotton Bowl Records
At four hours and 19 minutes, tonight’s AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic was the longest in Classic history. The previous record was three hours and 47 minutes in the 2003 Classic between LSU and Texas.
The combined 101 passing attempts by Missouri (44) and Oklahoma State (57) are the most combined passing attempts in Cotton Bowl history. The previous record was 84 by Oklahoma (49) and Texas A&M (35) in the 2013 Classic.
The combined 41 points in the fourth quarter is a Cotton Bowl record for combined points in any quarter. The previous record was 30 points (also in the fourth quarter) in the 1975 Classic Penn State and Baylor.
Missouri’s 24 points in the fourth quarter were the most by any team in Classic history in the fourth quarter and also ranked second for points by a team in any quarter (record 28 USC vs. Texas Tech in 1995).
Oklahoma State quarterback Clint Chelf’s 381 yards passing is a new AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic record. The previous record of 364 yards was held by Graham Harrell of Texas Tech vs. Ole Miss in 2009.
Chelf’s 67 total offensive plays (57 pass, 10 rush) is the most in Cotton Bowl history. The previous record was 64 by Graham Harrell of Texas Tech vs. Ole Miss in 2009.
Missouri defensive end Shane Ray’s 73-yard fumble return for a touchdown is the longest fumble return in Cotton Bowl history. The previous record was 65 yards by Steve Manstedt of Nebraska against Texas in 1974.
Ray’s return also marked the longest miscellaneous return for a touchdown besting the 68-yard return of a blocked PAT by Nigel Malone of Kansas State against Arkansas in 2012.
Oklahoma State’s 96 total offensive plays (57 pass, 39 rush) are a Cotton Bowl record. The previous record was 95 by LSU (46 pass, 49 rush) against Texas in 2003. The 187 combined total offensive plays is also a Cotton Bowl record (96 Oklahoma State, 91 Missouri).
The teams combined for 55 first downs (Oklahoma State 26, Missouri 29), tying a Classic record set in 2013 by Oklahoma and Texas A&M.
AT&T COTTON BOWL CLASSIC NOTES
The 1,010 combined yards of total offense is the third-highest total in Cotton Bowl Classic history. In 1990, Arkansas and Tennessee combined for 1,038 yards and in 2013 Texas A&M and Oklahoma combined for 1,034 yards.
Oklahoma State’s 548 total yards (167 rush, 381 pass) rank fourth in Classic history.
The 587 combined passing yards are the third-most in Classic history. Oklahoma State’s 381 passing yards rank second on the single team record list trailing only USC (435) in 1995.
The 72 total points scored is the third-highest combined total in Classic history. The record is 81 points set by Texas Tech and Ole Miss in 2009.
The combined 48 points scored by both teams in the second half are the second most in Classic history trailing only the 51 points scored by Penn State and Baylor in the 1975 Classic.
Missouri’s 41 points scored are tied for the fifth-most points in Cotton Bowl history. The Tigers 24 points in the fourth quarter were tied for the second-most in Classic history.
Oklahoma State’s 31 points are the third-most points by a losing team in the Cotton Bowl Classic.
With three rushing touchdowns, Missouri running back Henry Josey became only the fifth player in Cotton Bowl history to rush for at least three touchdowns in a game. Josey is tied for second on the list with Bobby Layne (Texas, 1946), Dicky Maegle (Rice, 1954) and Jim Brown (Syracuse, 1957). The record of four rushing touchdowns is held by Missouri’s Tony Temple and set in the 2008 Classic.
Josey’s combined 44 yards on his three touchdown runs ranks ninth on the Classic record list.
Missouri’s 91 total offensive plays ranks fourth in Cotton Bowl history.
Oklahoma State wide receiver Josh Stewart’s eight receptions ranks tied for seventh in Classic history. Stewart earned 84 receiving yards on his eight receptions.
Missouri placekicker Andrew Baggett’s 46-yard field goal with 6:29 left in the fourth quarter was the seventh longest in Cotton Bowl Classic history and the longest since LSU’s Josh Jasper hit a 50-yard field goal in 2011.
Missouri running back Henry Josey scored the first touchdown of the game on a three-yard run with 3:00 to play in the first quarter. Teams scoring first in the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic have won the game 43 times in 78 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classics. It also marked the 11th time in the past 14 games the team scoring first won the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic.
Missouri’s 5.4 yards per carry rushing average is tied for eighth best overall.
The 50 total pass completions by both teams is the third most in Classic history.
The 26 combined rushing first downs (Missouri 16, Oklahoma State 10) are tied for fourth most. The record of 32 is held by two other Classics (1970 and 1990).
The 25 combined passing first downs (16 Oklahoma State, 9 Missouri) are fourth most. The top spot is 32 set in the 2009 renewal between Texas Tech and Ole Miss.
The four combined first downs by penalty is seventh best in history.
Oklahoma State earned 16 passing first downs which is third most in the Classic. (The record is 18 set by Texas Tech vs. Ole Miss in 2009).
Missouri’s 16 rushing first downs are tied for ninth best in history with three other Classics. (The top spot is held by Arkansas (21) in 1990).
Missouri earned four first downs by penalty, which is good for third best. (The record is six, set by Texas in 1991).
The Tigers notched 29 total first downs (16 Pass, 9 Rush and 4 Penalty), which is third best. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State’s 26 first downs (16 Pass and 10 Rush) is tied with two other schools for eighth.
The 10 Missouri penalties were tied for the fifth most with Texas Tech (2006). In addition, the 100 Missouri penalty yards are the third most, tied with Tennessee in 2005.
Sooners quarterback Clint Chelf set a record for the most plays on offense. His 67 plays (57 pass and 10 rush) better the mark set by Graham Harrell (64) in 2009.
Chelf’s 447 total yards are the second most for an individual. The record (516) was set by Johnny Manziel of Texas A&M in the 2013 Classic.
Missouri Quarterback Ryan Franklin’s 22 1st half passing attempts are tied for fourth with Rick Clausen of Tennessee for most at halftime. (The record of 30 is currently held by Oklahoma Landry Jones – set in 2013).
With the win by Missouri, the SEC participant has now won six straight Cotton Bowl Classics and 10 of the last 11 Cotton Bowls. The only Big 12 team to win in that stretch was then Big 12-member Missouri when they defeated Arkansas in the 2008 Classic.
Tonight’s game was tied at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. It marked only the fifth time an AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic has been tied at 7-7 after the first quarter with the last being the 2007 game with Auburn and Nebraska.
Missouri carried a 17-7 lead into halftime of tonight’s game. Teams leading at halftime have now won 50 times in 78 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classics, including in 13 of the last 14 games.
Missouri’s 17-7 lead at halftime was the first time a Classic’s first half has ended with that score in 78 AT&T Cotton Bowl Classics.
Oklahoma State quarterback Clint Chelf’s 57 passing attempts rank second in Classic history. His 33 passing completions rank third in Cotton Bowl history. Oklahoma State also tied for second in team passing attempts (57) and third in completions (33).
Oklahoma State’s 100 yards in penalty yardage (10 penalties) ranks tied for the third-most in Classic history.
Oklahoma State quarterback Clint Chelf completed 13 of 20 passes for 120 yards in the first half. The 13 completions tied for fifth for completions by a quarterback in the first half of a Classic.
Tonight’s AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic attendance was 72,690.
