Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic Hosts Free Youth Clinic

ARLINGTON – It’s not every day that area youth receive an opportunity to hone their football skills on the turf of AT&T Stadium and then wrap up the day with a surprise visit by two former Dallas Cowboy greats and Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame members.

On Tuesday morning, the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic hosted more than 200 local youth, ages 11-14, in a free football clinic sponsored by the Children’s Health Andrews Institute in Plano and Wilson Sporting Goods.

Coaches from college programs throughout Texas guided the youngsters thru three hours of drills, emphasizing offensive and defensive fundamentals that will prove beneficial as they advance in youth sports.

SIX COLLEGE FOOTBALL LEGENDS ENSHRINED IN COTTON BOWL CLASSIC HALL OF FAME

Six individuals who helped shape the tradition of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic and college football history were inducted today into the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame during enshrinement ceremonies at AT&T Stadium.

The honorees in the 11th Hall of Fame Class included Texas A&M linebacker Quentin Coryatt, Arkansas/Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt, USC head coach John Robinson, Penn State halfback/linebacker Wallace Triplett, Texas running back Ricky Williams, and Oklahoma strong safety Roy Williams.

FORMER COTTON BOWL CHAIRMAN PASSES AWAY

A True Gentlemen and Leader… Gone But Not Forgotten!

The Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic lost a dear friend on Thursday, April 12, when Gayle M. Earls, the 34th Chairman of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association, passed away after a lengthy illness.

Earls was Chairman from 2004-06. In his position as Chairman, he coordinated all facets of the CBAA’s business affairs, including key negotiations with conference and television partners. He served on the Board of Directors for eight years and as an Executive Committee member for six years before becoming Chairman.

Mr. Cotton Bowl, Field Scovell, Receives Football Bowl Association's Legacy Award

Field Scovell, who served as Team Selection Chairman of the Cotton Bowl Classic for the better part of four decades, will be honored as a recipient of the Football Bowl Association’s Legacy Award for 2018.

Along with Scovell, three other men will receive the Legacy Award. Earnie Seiler, who created the Orange Bowl Festival and halftime extravaganzas, and Sugar Bowl founders Fred Digby and Warren Miller, will be honored for their “distinguished service within the Bowl industry,” when the FBA holds its annual meeting on April 17-19 in Boise, Idaho.

Goodyear Cotton Bowl Ticket Renewals Are Out!

Goodyear Cotton Bowl ticket holders should soon be receiving their renewal packets for the upcoming Semifinal Game, as they were mailed out, Friday, March 16th. 

Plans are well under way for this year’s game between two of the top four teams in the country. Mark your calendars for Saturday, DECEMBER 29, 2018. Kickoff will be at 3pm or 7pm and will be announced after the teams are determined by the College Football Playoff Selection Committee on December 2nd.

CARL ICE NAMED CHAIRMAN OF COTTON BOWL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

ARLINGTON, March 1, 2018 – North Texas businessman Carl R. Ice has been elected to a two-year term as Chairman of the Cotton Bowl Athletic Association (CBAA), the sponsoring agency of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

Ice is President and Chief Executive Officer for BNSF Railway based in Fort Worth. His involvement with the CBAA dates back to 2012 as a member of the Board of Directors. He has served as Vice-Chairman on the Classic’s Executive Committee for the past two years.

DEFENSE CARRIES BUCKEYES TO COTTON BOWL VICTORY

It was a warm and winning welcome back to Texas for J.T. Barrett and the Ohio State Buckeyes. With the 82nd Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic as the occasion, Barrett returned to his home state and the fifth-ranked Buckeyes returned to the site of their 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship using an opportunistic defensive effort to notch a 24-7 win over No. 8 USC in front of 67,510 fans at AT&T Stadium Friday night.

Barrett, who rushed for two touchdowns on the night, attended high school in Wichita Falls, Texas, just over two hours from the metroplex.

Webb Wraps up McKnight Trophy

Ohio State’s safety Damon Webb earned the McKnight Trophy as the defensive MVP for the 82nd Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, after the Buckeyes 24-7 victory over the USC Trojans.

On the third play of the game, Webb recovered a fumble that was forced by Kendall Sheffield and returned it 20 yards to the USC 19. The fumble recovery set OSU up for its first score of the day and was the second recovery of Webb’s career.

USC possessed the ball heading into the second quarter, but Webb soon changed that.

Ohio State's J.T. Barrett Dubbed Offensive MVP

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett was honored as the J. Curtis Stanford Offensive MVP award recipient after leading the Buckeyes to a 24-7 victory over USC. Barrett rushed for two touchdowns and produced one Big Ten and two school records in the 82nd Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic and his final game as a Buckeye.

Less than three minutes into the matchup, Barrett set the tone notching a school record on the first touchdown of the game. Barrett eclipsed the single-season touchdown record, which he added to in the second quarter with a 28-yard score to bring his total to 47 in the 2017 season.

82nd Goodyear Cotton Bowl Postgame Notes

Tonight’s game is the 82nd Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, and the ninth played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The game is the 15th Classic between conference champions/co-champions.
Ohio State won the coin toss, and elected to defer its choice to the second half. USC then chose to receive to start the 82nd Classic.

The Classic kicked off at 7:40 pm Central time.

Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic Records

Individual Game Records:

USC wide receiver Deonta Burnett set a Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic record for receptions in a game with 12 catches for 139 yards. The previous record for receptions in a game was held by Rashaun Woods of Oklahoma State who had 11 receptions (223 yards) vs. Ole Miss in 2004.

Ohio State defensive back Kyle Sheffield tied a Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic record with four pass break ups, tying four other players. The last to have four pass break ups in a single Cotton Bowl game was Kansas State’s Mario Smith (1997).

USC SET FOR PRIME TIME, FRIDAY NIGHT SHOWDOWN AGAINST THE BUCKEYES

Taking time for one last practice session for the 82nd Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic, the No. 8 USC Trojans conducted a short walk-through at Coppell High School Thursday afternoon.

The Pac-12 champions now play the waiting game for just over 24 hours before taking center stage under the prime time spotlight at AT&T Stadium against the No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes. Head coach Clay Helton said his squad just needs to translate their on-field preparations to in-game execution in order to come out victorious over a talented Buckeye bunch.

BUCKEYES READY TO PLAY

The Ohio State Buckeyes closed a week of work and play with a walk-through on Thursday afternoon at AT&T Stadium.

The No. 5 Buckeyes (11-2, 8-1 Big Ten) will put their preparation to the test Friday against the No. 8 USC Trojans (11-2, 8-1 Pac-12) in the 82nd Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer had plenty to do before getting his team to the walk-through. His obligations included the head coaches’ press conference with USC’s Clay Helton in the morning and later the Goodyear Big Play Luncheon.

TROJANS PUT FINAL TOUCHES ON GAME PLAN FOR OHIO STATE

The process is almost complete.

The No. 8 USC Trojans went through a light workout Wednesday afternoon at AT&T Stadium in their penultimate prep session before taking on No. 5 Ohio State in the 82nd edition of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

“It was a really good; a good red zone practice for us now two days out, 48 hours away from game day,” said head coach Clay Helton. “The kids are excited. It was a little bit emotional for us because it’s really our last practice with our seniors.
